Move your city’s website and staff email to .gov

AB 1637 sets the deadline: January 1, 2029. I do the move for a fixed price, and you can claim the cost back from the State.

What the law requires

By January 1, 2029, every California city must run its public website and its staff email on a .gov or .ca.gov domain. A website left on an old domain must redirect to the new one. Charter cities are included.

How the move works

  1. Inventory week 1

I list every domain and subdomain you use, your DNS host, web platform and email system. I also list every system that sends mail as the city, such as utility billing, permits, agendas and alerts.

  2. The .gov domain weeks 1–3

I pick a name that meets CISA’s rules. Most cities must include the state abbreviation, as in CityNameCA.gov. A staff member submits the request on get.gov and your city manager approves it. I prepare every answer. Then I set up DNS with DNSSEC.

  3. Website weeks 2–5

I add the .gov domain on your web platform with certificates for every subdomain. Every old URL gets a permanent redirect to the same page on .gov, so links, bookmarks and search results keep working.

  4. Staff email weeks 3–7

I add the .gov domain to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Each employee’s .gov address becomes primary. The old address stays as an alias, so nothing bounces.

  5. Cutover and handoff weeks 6–8

I watch delivery and DMARC reports for two weeks and fix what turns up. You get a runbook and a list of every change.

Price

$4,850 fixed for the website and domain

Steps 1 to 3: inventory, the .gov domain, DNS, certificates and redirects.

Staff email at a fixed price

Steps 4 and 5. I set the figure by email, from a few questions about your mailboxes and systems, before any work starts.

What you provide

  • Approval from the city manager or mayor for the .gov request.
  • Admin access to DNS, the website platform and email.
  • One staff contact and an agreed change window.

You can claim the cost back

The Commission on State Mandates found AB 1637 to be a reimbursable state mandate (Case 24-TC-04, December 5, 2025). Contractor invoices are an eligible cost.

Cities file an annual claim with the State Controller by February 15 after the fiscal year (Program 394). I itemize invoices by the three reimbursable activities: website, redirects and staff email.
